This annual spring event showcases the talent of graduating studio art major Amanda Grove, who is exhibiting watercolor paintings that explore her curiosity and fascination with patterns.

I am a graphic designer and painter who is curious about visual patterns. In my work as a graphic designer, I incorporate text and forms to convey meaning in an accessible and visually compelling way.

In painting, I use watercolor to explore how I feel or think about something; the fluid nature of the medium allows me to stay open to movement and change and to slowly build the image over time. I’m interested in the concepts of transformation and personal development, and I use the circle as a way to explore those themes. I use my painting as a way to explore an idea or feeling, to learn from it and hear what it is saying. In contrast, my work in design seems to be more of a statement, a space where all the experiments in my paintings come together. I’m inspired by Swedish mystic painter Hilma Af Klint and her use of color, abstraction, and sense of spiritualism. My work is also informed by Emma McNally a contemporary self-taught artist, and how she manipulates circles and linework with carbon.

Ultimately, I want viewers to understand what my artwork means to me, while also taking away what they need or want from it. I want them to make it their own and connect their own stories to it.
