January 17, 5–7pm
This exhibition considers the opposition of collective movement through social dancing and the increasing presence of federal law enforcement and military in U.S. cities. Collaged cloth banners pay homage to dancers who move together in protest and with community. The textured effect of the paint on sheer cloth echoes camouflage and tie-dye, intentionally blending the two meanings of “Boots on the Ground”—the title of a new, popular Black line dance and a militaristic phrase.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I work in textile and movement to explore personal and collective preservation, restoration, and expansion. Handmade banners (dyed, stitched, torn, appliqued, inked, embroidered) reference the visual, kinetic, and metaphoric elements of collective dance.
